Needlepoint class for the presently frustrated.

Do you:

Well this workshop is for you!
Together we will work on YOUR specific project and help you master some of those stitches, get acquainted with a variety of fibers you can use, and explore your own creativity.

Here's how we'll do it.

  • You send me a picture of the canvas you want to stitch in advance of the class.
  • I'll send you 1-3 stitches and suggest threads you can use.
  • We will work during the workshop to learn the stitches and get you comfortable with what you're learning.

Ribbon Embroidery with Cheryl Swanson
Thursday, October 18, 2012
10:00 am – 12:00 pm

Ribbon embroidery has a long history from court presentation gowns in the 18th century to couture embellishments in the early twentieth century. In ribbon embroidery, we will be learning a number of traditional embroidery stitches that take on an added dimension when done with ribbon in addition to some stitches specific to working with ribbons. We will also discuss aspects of design. A number of samples will be shown in class.

Students need to bring an embroidery hoop and scissors.

Cartonnage (Ribbon Tray covered with Toile de Jouy) with Yoshiko Ikeda
Thursday, October 25, 2012
12:00 pm – 4:00 pm

$55 class / $17 Kit (ribbon not included)
Class is limited to 6 students.
Reservation: at least 1 week before

*Please bring two small towels (one wet, the other dry).

Cartonnage has been one of France's luxurious traditional crafts since the mid-18th century. In modern times, it is made with construction boards (cartons), fabrics, book-binding clothes, and/or print papers, embellished elegantly with ribbons, tassels, embroidery and the like, so becoming not simply a beautiful personal item, but also a functional and expressive interior "objet d'art." Learning this technique enables one to create many types of boxes, trays, baskets, picture frames, document files and more, bringing about a sense of joy to match the individual's own interior fashion.

A "Ribbon Tray" would be a perfect gift for any holiday season and a great start to learn the basic techniques of cartonnage, for example, glueing, fabric covering, cutting, trimming, and dealing with edges and corners. In this class, we will also learn how to make beautiful ribbon bows, used in many situations. Material kits include nostalgic prints of Toile de Jouy, velvety book-binding clothes, pre-cut construction boards, inner lining paper, and padding as well. Please select your favorite ribbon from Ribbonerie's fabulous breath-taking collection during the class. All tools can be borrowed. The instructor's sample will be on show at Ribbonerie. All are welcome to participate.

Yoshiko Ikeda has dedicated herself to the art of cartonnage since 2007, having been taught by several experienced teachers in Japan. While running her own atelier, Atelier Gracieuse, she is also a certified cartonnage instructor accredited by Madam Kayoko Bigeard, who has established Atelier Cartonnage in both France and Japan. Yoshiko has participated in Madam Bigeard's exhibitions three times, with her own unique designs. She has occasionally joined local holiday festivals in both exhibitions and sales as well. Her works are aiming towards simplicity on the one hand and fascinating designs on the other hand, so bringing pleasure, insight, excitement, and a sense of calm to all from within.

Learn to make tiny ribbon flowers with this picot-edged variegated ribbon. Fashion them into a diminutive ring. This ribbon called "rococo" is a copy of 18th century ribbon that bedecked the dresses of Marie Antoinette and her ladies. We'll make 2 different versions of this mini flower while learning the tricks necessary for success with little ribbon. Once you've got the knack (and the speed!) you can use these little gems like confetti in your larger and more ambitious ribbon flower creations. The pretty result of your efforts might decorate a sachet or pillow, a little girls dress, your hat or lapel. You might fashion it into a fancy buckle.

Candace Kling, author of the bestselling The Artful Ribbon, brings to class her passion for ribbon and 3 decades of research and teaching experience. She has taught both nationally and internationally. Her artwork is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Museum of Art and Design in NYC, as well as in our own Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Cartonnage (A Rectangular Box with a Separate Lid) with Yoshiko Ikeda

$63 class / $12 Kit (ribbon not included)
Class is limited to 6 students.

*Please bring two small towels (one wet, the other dry).

This box would be a very functional interior item to store anything in any room as well as the ribbon tray. (The instructor is planning to use such a box for cutlery during the coming party seasons.) In this class, we will learn how to assemble construction boards, strengthen the box with craft tape, cover it with fabric, make neat corners, line the inside and cover the bottom. The lid will be padded, which will soften any impact, through which an atmosphere can be harmonized with the gentle touches of other kinds of Toile de Jouy prints. This item will be complemented with ribbon. Please select your favorite one from Ribbonerie's beautiful collection during the class. Although instruction is open to all, having taken the "Ribbon Tray" class beforehand would be helpful in understanding the process more smoothly. The instructor's sample will be on show at Ribbonerie.

Candace discovered little beauties like these on the sash of a Victorian bathrobe at The Oakland Museum of California. We'll start by making a basic puff ruffled sphere, discussing the success of various fabrics. Patterns for many variations will be demonstrated. Bigger ball…mini ruffles…maxi ruffles…multiple ruffles…all will be discussed. Add some strands of multi-colored ribbon and transform your bauble into a tassel.
